Your homestead exemption can save you as much as 20% on your year property tax bill. The best time to apply for the exemption is the 1st week of January. Fill out the Name Change form and the Homestead Exemption application, and mail them to your appraisal district along with a copy of your originally filed warranty deed, and a copy of your current ID with the address of your new property on it. By April your mortgage payment should be reduced by your mortgage company to reflect the change in your property tax escrow. One of my clients is expecting a $800 dollars savings per year.
