A Brief History of “Spring”: The Beginning

The town of Spring is in Houston, Texas, in Harris County, and is a part of the Houston-Woodlands-Sugar land metropolitan area. With a population of 54,298 (According to the 2010 Census), and a total land area of 23.6 square miles, Spring is a quiet suburb with a tranquil and friendly atmosphere. The town of Spring refers to an area of the Harris County, and the Old Town Spring is located at the intersection of Spring-Cypress and Hardy roads, and covers a small  area of roughly 1 square kilometer.

The original inhabitants of the town of Spring were the Orcoquiza Native Americans, who were an indigenous people of the Southeastern Woodlands and spoke the Atakapa language. In the late 18th century, they started to join the surrounding tribes because of various epidemics.

The first true government of this town were formed by the Texas General Council of the Provisional Government in 1836, and the town of Spring in the Harrisburg Municipality were created. After the placement of a trading post in 1838 by William Pierpont, the town slowly started to grow. By 1840, this town had grown into a small settlement. Soon after that, German immigrants started moving in, and started their own farms. Other inhabitants of Louisiana and other parts of our country soon started to settle here. The residents grew sugar cane and cotton, which were the main cash crops. The International and Great Northern Railroad was built right through Spring in 1871, and the development of this small town boomed. The Post Office was built and within 15 years, Spring had almost two hundred residents, saw mills, cotton mills, churches and multiple schools. As Spring moved into the 20th century, the number of residents increased to the four digit mark, the Spring State Bank was opened. The progress and development of our town of Spring goes on till date, offering a great place to live in.

The Old Town Spring is now a popular tourist attraction, and offers great restaurants, amazing natural beauty and vibrant annual festivals.

Weather/Climate of Spring

Spring has warm and humid summers, with mild to cool winters. This town has evenly distributed annual rainfall. Summers are humid because of the maritime airflow from the west side. The average yearly temperature in Spring is 67.6°F (19.8°C). At its warmest, it gets to about 83.2°F (28.4°C). At its coldest, it goes down to about 50.1°F (10.1°C). That doesn’t mean you won’t need to pack your winter coats! Springs winters do get really cold from time to time, going below freezing temperature. The lowest recorded temperature in Spring was 1.0°F (-17.2°C). The average amount of snow is 0.4 inches. The average amount of annual rainfall in Spring is 47.5 inches, or 1206.5 millimeters. May is usually the wettest month of the year, with an average of 5.0 inches of rainfall. In general, this town has a comfortable weather pattern.

Median Income

Median Household income is $56,662, which is almost seventeen thousand more than the state average, and family income is also within that same range, and has almost the same difference with the state average.

Healthcare Facilities

Spring has very good healthcare facilities. There are quite a few hospitals and health centers in this town considering the size of it. The Covenant Grace at 1003 Pine Walk Trail, the Green Valley House ar 5202 Alamosa LN, the Meadow Hill Community home at 21710 Meadow hill Drive are a few of them. There is also a nursing home at the North Pointe boulevard.

Aerial Transportation

There are two heliports in Spring. One is the Houston Northwest Medical Center Heliport, and the other one is the Strack Farms Heliport.

Amtrack Stations

The Houston Amtrack Station is just 20 miles from Spring. It has wheelchair accessibility, public restrooms, public payphones, vending machines, free short-term and long term parking, taxi stand and public transit.

 


Education

Primary and Secondary Schools

The town of Spring is within the Spring Independent School District, Conroe Independent School District, and Klein Independent School district. There are several elementary schools such as the George E. Anderson, Chet Burchett, Mildred I. Jenkins, McNabb, Slayers, Lewis Eugene Smith, Pearl M. Hirsch, Northgate Crossing etc. which are in the Spring CDP, and serve sections of this CDP.

There are four middle schools; Bailey, Dueitt, Roberson and Twin Creeks. These are all within the CDP and serve sections of the CDP.

High schools include the Spring High School, Carl Wunsche Sr. High School, Klein Oak High School, Klein High School, Klein Collins High School, Oak Ridge High School, The Woodlands High School and the Woodlands College Park High School. Not all of them are in the immediate area of Spring though, and the residents of the town are designated to go to Spring High School. The Carl Wunsche Sr. institution is within the CDP. The Harris County residents who have Spring addresses are within the Klein Independent School District, and attend the high schools Klein Oak, Klein and Klein Collins. The Montgomery County residents are within the Conroe Independent School District, and attend the Oak Ridge, Woodlands, and Woodlands College Park High Schools.

The Lone Star College System operates in the area, formerly known as the North Harris Montogomery Community College District. Upon the voting by The Residents of Spring Independent School District and the other two K-12 school districts, the North Harris County College was created and has been operating since 1973.

The Regency Beauty Institute-Cypresswood, located at 19770 North Freeway, is a renowned cosmetology institute, featuring the Studio Luma program. It is a private institution with a full-time enrollment of 108.

There are also a number of great institutions near Spring, with short travel distances.

Churches

Churches in Spring include the Candlestick Baptist hurch, the Cypress Trails United Methodist Church, the Spring Antioch Baptist Church, the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, the Lexington Woods Church of Christ, the Tamina Church of Christ, the Spring Creek Seventh Day Adventist Church, the North Woods Baptist Church and the Spring Memorial Baptist Church.

Public Libraries

Several branches of the Harris County Public Library are operational all around Spring. There is the Baldwin Boettcher Branch Library at Mercer Park at 22248 Aldine Westfield Road, south of Spring. To the west of the Spring CDP, we have The Barbara Bush Branch Library at is located in at 6817 Cypresswood Drive. This particular one was upgraded and expanded in 2002. The current branch is estimated to hold over 120,000 books and materials, almost double its previous capacity.

Parks And Recreation

There are four operational parks under the Harris County Precinct in the CDP of Spring. They are – Southwell Park, Pundt Park, Bayer Park and a water park called Splash Town Houston. The Southwell park has an area of 5 acres that includes the B.F. Clark Community Building. The Bayer Park has an area of 30 acres, which include four softball fields and seven baseball fields. The Pundt Park is the biggest of them all, with 380 acres of land. The development of this park began in 2008.

If you are a fan of golfing, Spring will not disappoint you. The Cypresswood Golf Club is located at 21602 Cypresswood Drive, and maintains its facilities upon the lands leased by Harris County.

The Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens are operated by Precinct 4, which is adjacent to the Spring CDP. It has over 250 acres of land, and are open daily with free admission. They were named after Thelma and Charles Mercer, who purchased the original land for their own garden home, and preserved native trees. Harris County purchased the property in 1974, and the total area has grown to 325 acres. It also houses the Baldwin Boettcher Branch Library. The main attractions of this botanical garden include an Endangered Species Garden, an Azalea Trail, a Bamboo Garden, a Bald Cypress pond, a Hickory Bog, the Jake Roberts Maple collection, an Herb Garden, a prehistoric garden, a rock garden, Perennial gardens, the Post Oak Uplands, a tropical garden etc.

Tourist Attractions

There are quite a few amazing tourist attractions is Spring. If you are new in town, you should check out the visitors center at 606 Spring Cypress.

The most popular tourist destination is the Old Town Spring, which is an old railroad town that has been turned into a great place for entertainment. It offers great eateries, restaurants, wine tastings, shopping, amazing festivals, and so much more.

The most notable festivals that are held here are the Texas Wine and Art Festival, the Texas Crawfish and Music Festival, the Autumn Art and Wine Festival, the Pet Fest and the Home for the Holiday. The most fun event is undoubtedly the Crawfish and Music Festival, which is an annual event. It features live concerts, carnival rides and amazing food, and is a great event to enjoy for people of all ages. If you go to the Autumn Art and Wine Festival, you’ll be able to sample wine from wineries all over Texas, and buy wine bottles from the Autumn Art Wine Store. Pet Fest is a great event for animal lovers, and you will get to see both common and uncommon pets. There are also rescue groups and service groups who raise awareness and educate the people about animals. This festival hosts fashion shows, contests, photography and demonstrations during its two day event. The annual Home for the Holidays is a great event, which adds another layer of festivities for Christmas. Shops that are open for extended hours, shooting photos with Santa Claus are a few attractions of this festival. It is a great event for kids to enjoy.

If you’re a tourist and need a hotel to stay in, the Homewood Suites by Hilton, and Comfort Suites are two great choices for you. They both have clean, modern looks, and helpful staff members to see to your needs.

There is the Spring Museum which houses all the old artifacts and the history of this town. They have the original documents and photos of the 19th century when the railroad was being built and when the town had started growing rapidly. It is a good place to learn about the history of Spring, and a great place to take the kids. Best thing about it – free admission!

The main shopping center of this town is the Woodlands mall, which is about 10 miles from the Old Town Spring. Over 30 restaurants and eateries, and a huge movie theater makes this place a very good choice for visiting. The shops are very well stocked, and even include local art dealers. It also houses the biggest ice-skating rink during the holidays.

If you love music, you should definitely check out he Cynthia Mitchell Woods Pavilion. Only about 10 miles from the Old Town Spring, it is an amazing amphitheatre, and famous celebrities such as Santana and Paul McCartney have graced it with their presence. The design is very interesting, as you will have to sit under a huge white tarp with huge fans circulating air.

The Wet ‘n’ Wild Splashtown is a great theme park for a family trip. A bit crowded, but the fun rides more than make up for it. A well maintained park with a good staff makes this a great place for a summer holiday trip.

The StillGoode Inc. is a great place to shop for furniture, collectibles, art and decor, and they have excellent value and selection of products. Their 9000 square foot showroom has a huge inventory for you to browse from. They also upgrade their stock frequently, so finding new and exciting products to buy is very easy.

Another great shopping place would be Crazy Mama’s Celestial Emporium, and your nose would thank you for visiting this place. You get to create your own fragrance from a huge collection of essential oils. There are also a great selection of skin-care products, crystals, gemstone jewelry and more.

If you want to take your kids to a fun place, consider the Bouncin’ Bears. As the name suggests, they have amazing bouncing castles, snacks and drinks, and a very helpful staff. A great place for birthday parties!

Topgolf is another place you’d love. Though it’s not “real” golf, the affordable prices and great food make for a good experience.

If you are a movie bug, you have got to go to the AMC Loews. This is a great movie theatre with modern amenities such as reclining chairs and streamlined ticket services. The old theater has been remodeled and heavily modified, and turned into this luxurious one. You can even book your tickets online.

The TGR Exotics Wildlife Park is also an amazing destination. There are more than one hundred animals, consisting of twenty five different species. They have goats, pigs, llamas, camels, porcupines, aardvarks, sloths, anteaters, kangaroos, small horses, turkeys, tortoises and many more.

If you are a foodie, you will love Spring. Amazing restaurants, such as the Corkscrew BBQ, the Ate Cafe, Rudy’s, the Black Sheep Bistro, Italian Cafe, Just Burgers, Pappasito’s Cantina, La Chef, Eden Cafe, Babin’s Seafood House, Rakuu, Spring Creek BBQ, Mellow Mushroom, Virginia’s Cakes and more, Crossroads Tea Room, Rao’s Bakery and Coffee Cafe, and so many more are within the confines of this town. They have amazing food, great atmosphere, and in general, these are some great places to hang out in Spring.
